Usage
Colorant and decolorizer in the glass industry: It serves a dual purpose in glassmaking.
- Decolorizer: Trace iron impurities in raw glass often impart a faint yellow-green tint to the glass. Zinc selenite can produce a reddish tint in the glass melt that complements the greenish tint, thereby offsetting or “neutralizing” the unwanted green tint and leaving the final glass appearing colorless and transparent (or neutral).
- Colorant: In high concentrations, it is used to create specialty glasses with red, pink, or salmon hues, such as in art glass and some colored glass products.
Ceramic glaze industry: It is used as an additive in ceramic glazes to impart specific color effects and chemical properties.
Chemical research and materials science: It is used as a precursor in the synthesis of other selenium-containing compounds or semiconductor materials.
Laboratory reagent: It is used as an analytical chemical reagent in laboratories and for industrial research.
